The Willow School is proud to announce that Dr. Lauren Fullmer, Math Department Chair and Co-Director of Middle School, has published an original research article in Gifted Education International, a peer-reviewed educational journal. Co-authored with colleagues from Rutgers University and the University of Perugia, Italy, the article, titled “The social-emotional competencies of gifted children must be intentionally developed, ideally in inclusive education contexts,” emphasizes the transformative role of peer mentorship and leadership in inclusive classrooms, with Willow’s programs highlighted as key examples.

Dr. Fullmer’s research underscores the value of Willow’s peer-mentorship, advisory, and service-learning initiatives in developing essential leadership skills such as communication, resilience, and adaptability. She explains how these opportunities enable students to set goals, collaborate effectively, and contribute meaningfully to their communities.

“Leadership encompasses more than taking on an appointed position or role; it involves setting realistic and measurable goals, developing actionable plans, and collaborating with others to achieve them,” Dr. Fullmer writes. At Willow, teachers support these principles, helping foster responsibility, openness, and appreciation among students.

We celebrate Dr. Fullmer’s achievement and are honored that Willow’s dedication to empowering students in a supportive, real-world learning environment is recognized in the broader context of educational excellence.
