Just before spring break, Willow celebrated our annual International Day. Each year, Willow specials teachers (visual arts, handcrafts and architecture, music, world languages, and wellness) work together to create a whole-school experience where students explore and celebrate the cultures of one specific area of the globe. This year, our community came together to discover India and its neighboring countries. In true Willow fashion, this year’s International Day was filled with engaging activities, hands-on learning, and opportunities to experience the region’s traditions through food, stories, art, music, and movement.
Throughout the day, students took part in Indian dance and yoga sessions, listened to traditional tales, explored the sounds of Sanskrit, and learned about cultural traditions through music, art and virtues. Outdoors, traditional Indian games provided a fun and active way to experience the region’s heritage. Some of our Willow families who have direct connections to Indian heritage supported and led workshops, which truly added authenticity to the experience.
Our school was transformed with colorful rangoli designs, Tibetan prayer flags, and national symbols, creating an immersive environment. A highlight of the day was the opportunity to sample a variety of traditional dishes and street snacks. Many of us experienced new flavors and spices for the first time.
The celebration concluded in the Barn Studio with a special performance by Surati for the Performing Arts as they presented Tyohaar: The Festivals of India. Through dance and storytelling, the performers brought India’s diverse cultural festivals to life, leaving students with a deeper appreciation for the traditions they had explored throughout the day.
A big thank you to all who helped make this event a success. We are grateful for our community’s sharing of time, effort, and enthusiasm that made it possible for everyone to take part in this meaningful learning experience. We look forward to next year’s International Day, when we’ll explore the cultures of Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Island nations!
