Two members of our Competitive Math League were recently recognized for their outstanding performance in the Noetic Learning Math Competition (NLMC), a nationally respected contest for students in grades 2–8. Held twice a year, the NLMC challenges students to think critically, solve complex problems, and strengthen the skills that support future learning in STEM fields.
Both students earned the highest scores on the rigorous 20-question assessment, making them the top performers on our team. One student received a national recognition ribbon for placing in the top 50 percent of all participants nationwide and an honorable mention on the National Honor Roll, while another achieved a score above her current grade level!
The Competitive Math League is an after-school enrichment program at Willow that works on both individual and team math challenges. When asked why they joined the League, students collaborated to create a mission statement that reflects their shared goals: “To solve challenging problems, work together, and have fun stretching our brains!”
Each week, League members engage in team-based challenges that emphasize collaboration, communication, and strategic thinking. Students practice a range of problem-solving approaches, including “guess, check, and refine,” drawing diagrams, and identifying patterns. Sessions also include timed math tests and estimation brain teasers designed to strengthen skills related to quantity, weight, and length.
Looking ahead, students will continue working regularly with Math Olympiads for Elementary and Middle Schools (MOEMS) tests to further develop their mathematical reasoning and problem-solving abilities. We are incredibly proud of these two students and of all Competitive Math League members for their dedication, perseverance, and enthusiasm for learning.
