Willow sixth grade engineers recently took their creativity and problem-solving skills to the next level at the Future City Regional Competition at Rutgers University, and what an inspiring experience it was!

Students proudly showcased the results of months of collaboration, research, and design. Guided by the theme, “Farm to Table,” students worked in teams to imagine cities of the future. From the earliest brainstorming sessions to the final builds, students used the engineering design process to tackle real-world challenges, thinking deeply about how communities function and how they can be improved.

Their models highlight innovative solutions for sustainable living, including ideas around reducing food waste, improving energy efficiency, and designing smarter transportation systems. Students also explored how to responsibly manage both natural and man-made resources, ensuring their cities could thrive for generations to come.

Their hard work, imagination, and dedication were on full display, and the future looks bright. More than a competition, this experience gave students the opportunity to think critically, collaborate meaningfully, exercise their engineering skills, and meet professional civil engineers. One Willow team took home the “Best Newcomer” award, and students are eager to participate again next year.
