Behind the Scenes at the Willow Talent Show

My first year at Willow, I was in fifth grade. When our music teacher announced that there would be a Talent Show, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to participate. But she encouraged me to take on the role of stage manager. It was a great experience, and it let me be part of the show without taking center stage. Over the past few years, I have held multiple roles at the Willow Talent Show, including marketing, auditions, stage management, and coordination.

To work behind the scenes at the Talent Show definitely takes patience, time, and perseverance. Running the audition process is really fun, but it can be chaotic. You have to gather all the acts, schedule their audition time, and make sure all the acts follow our school’s guidelines. This year, we had over 30 acts audition!

My family has a professional background in production: Broadway shows, movies, and advertising. I’ve always wanted to be like my parents, and I think that every leadership position that I have the opportunity to take on brings me one step closer to becoming more like my parents and follow in their footsteps. Working on the Talent Show has helped me grow so much as a leader. I have a greater appreciation for the background of any production, which has given me more tools to help in different leadership positions. I love working with younger kids and watching them get better at what they do! I have gained confidence to participate in other activities both at Willow and outside of school, including our Middle School Poetry Slam, the Ethics Bowl, and softball and basketball.

One of my favorite aspects of working on the Talent Show is getting to know the artists and performers. I also love to be part of the Willow community in this way. I’ve encouraged other Willow friends to get involved, which means I can spend time with my friends in a way that also helps me grow as a person and give back to the school.

I would encourage any student who wants to try out for an act or help with behind-the-scenes management: Everyone would love to see you involved in the Talent Show! Of course, sometimes it can be scary, but everyone there is supporting you, and we will help you no matter what!
